I met Ryan Barnard at a woodworking clinic through the Semper Fi Fund, where he and James Wright taught traditional woodworking techniques. Ryan’s passion for woodworking really stands out, and he has a great way of breaking things down so they actually make sense. He didn’t just show techniques—he explained them in a way that clicked. If you get the chance to learn from him, don’t pass it up. Highly recommended!

The answer is Yes!

This last week, my organization took 10 veterans to Chicago to learn traditional hand-tool woodworking. One of my service members created a curriculum and assisted a gentleman who taught us all joinery, the methods used for layout, and how to use, sharpen, and make each tool.

It's here that I noticed how much prep goes into making any project, plus it takes an immense amount of desire to craft your vision out of the raw wood. To the trained eye, they can look at grain structure and tell you exactly how each rough piece of timber can be used. This includes where, and how each piece can go, it is quite specific.

I cannot help but make the connection between the hand-tool craftsman and the sanctification process of God. You see, God looks at the inner part of man, then begins to hew the superfluous parts of our character, integrity, and spiritual life quality. Much like the craftsman, God doesn't look at the exterior, it's the interior he's after. In other words, a continual work in progress.

Psalms 139:14 states "I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made". God has made us each with a unique grain structure that he is crafting into the person He knows we can be, but as well as created to be.

As we see, as we get sawed, chiseled, and planed He is bringing out the most beautiful parts inside us all. So, the next time you hit life's toughest challenges and it feels hard, rough, and painful all the Lord of He can give you relief. I'm certain you'll find the answer is yes!
